A base map is a foundational geographic map that provides a background for displaying other data layers. It serves as a reference framework, typically showing essential features like roads, boundaries, bodies of water, and cities, and can include different styles such as streets, imagery, or topography.

The Base map is Giraffe is built using Map Box, and Giraffe ships with a few pre-configured styles. Each style contains different colors and included data.

Unlike Layers in your projects, the basemap cannot be dynamically styled within the Giraffe environment. The colors, labels, and included data is controlled by the Base Map itself. You can create your own custom base map using Mapbox, and add that to your projects if desired.

Projects using the Giraffe Default Template do include a layer group with some layers that control visibility of certain parts of the base map. You can toggle on/off, or adjust the opacity of these base map layers.
