Split and Trim

Reshape and divide geometries by splitting polygons and trimming away unwanted areas.

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Split and Trim give you precise control over polygon boundaries — useful when site conditions change or your initial geometry needs to be broken apart.

Split

Split is useful when a single polygon needs to become two pieces — for example, when a site is subdivided or split across ownership boundaries.

Select the polygon

Use x or select Split from More Tools/Command Line.

Draw a line through the polygon

Double click to end the command

Trim

Trim is useful when you need to cut away part of a geometry, such as removing an area that falls outside a boundary or trimming back an oversized polygon.

Draw a line intersecting a geometry.

Select the line.

Select Trim from More Tools/Command Line.

Click on the portion of the geometry you want to remove.
