When you draw, all of your authored geometries live on a Drawing Layer.

New geometries are automatically placed on the current active layer.

You can also move geometries to other layers using the properties palette.

Activate Layers

The current active layer is Green in the layer tree.

Click any drawing layer in the Layer Palette to activate it.

Swap Layers

To change what layer a geometry lives on, open the properties palette.

Click the layer dropdown, and select an existing layer.

Or, create a new one.

Cut and Paste to Layers

Select the geometry you want to move

Use ctrl + x to cut

Select the layer you want to place the geometry onto to activate it.

Use ctrl + v to paste

Empty Drawing Layers

An empty drawing layer doesn't have any geometries living on it. You can tell a drawing layer is empty because it will have (empty) next to the layer name in the palette.
