Calculate Cut & Fill

The terrain of a site can make or break a project. Use the Terrain app to calculate siteworks using Cut & Fill.

Once you've added building pads, the cut & fill calculations begin to generate in the Terrain tab.

The elevation summary section displays the minimum (lowest) and maximum (highest) elevation datums for both the original terrain mesh and the edited version if building pads with cut & fill are in the project.

The cut & fill calculations section shows the volume of earthworks based on the visible building pads and their interaction with the editable terrain mesh.

Each building pad will generate its own line item in the Cut and Fill calculations.

Add a new building pad by clicking the [+] in the top right of the table.

To see which building pad is associated with each line, tick a checkbox to highlight that pad in the canvas.

The typical goal with earthworks is to generate the least amount of cut & fill volume (ie - make the Total as close to 0 as possible).

In a project without remediation issues, this would assume dirt from the cut would be used as the fill.

You can use the Terrain app to optimize for this condition.

Select all of the pads you would like to optimize by ticking their checkboxes.

(Select all by ticking the top checkbox).

Then, click the Magic Wand at the bottom of the cut & fill table:

The elevation datum of each building pad will be automatically adjusted to make the Total site works as close to 0 as possible.

The meaning of cut and fill is more than just the amount of soil to move - it translates to cost on a project. Use analytics to incorporate cut and fill amounts in your cost analysis.

Cut and Fill volumes are stored as properties of the Building Pad. Pull those properties into Analytics calculations by searching the Property dropdown in Components.

Add a currency value to your analytics calculation to create a site works cost calculation.
