Images and Design Elements in Paper

Draw, sketch, and drop images onto a sheet

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Drop in a site photo, a precedent image, or a consultant's drawing and crop it to sit right next to your plans, or sketch a quick markup to flag a revision for the team. Paper's sheets aren't limited to viewports: you can draw and place images directly on them.

Add an image

Add an image to a sheet in any of these ways:

  • Click the image tool in the toolbar, or press Cmd/Ctrl + U, and pick a file.

  • Paste an image from your clipboard.

  • Drag a file from your computer onto the sheet.

Paper accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF, and SVG images, plus MP4 and MOV video.

Crop an image

Double-click an image to enter crop mode, then drag its edges or corners to crop it. Double-click a crop handle or edge to snap the crop to that edge.

Draw on a sheet

Paper's toolbar has a full drawing toolkit for markup and diagrams, not just images and viewports.

  • A freehand draw/pencil tool (D), an eraser (E), and a laser pointer for presenting (K).

  • An arrow tool (A) and a line tool (L), including directional block arrows.

  • Shape tools: rectangle (R), ellipse (O), diamond, triangle, trapezoid, rhombus, hexagon, cloud, star, and more.

  • A sticky note tool (N) for call-outs and comments.

  • A frame tool (F) for grouping and cropping a region of the sheet.

Style panel

Click the colour-wheel icon in the top bar to show the style panel for a selected native shape (color, size, and dash pattern). It's hidden by default, so turn it on before styling a drawn shape.
