Snap Settings

Choose what the cursor snaps to while you draw

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Place parcel lines, setbacks, and building footprints exactly where they belong by choosing what the cursor snaps to.

Open snap settings in Giraffe V4

  1. In the drawing toolbar, click •••.

  2. Hover Snap & Grid.

  3. Click a toggle to turn a snap setting on or off.

Open snap settings in Giraffe V6

Click the arrow next to the Snapping button (the magnet icon) in the context bar.

OR

In the menu bar, click Map > Snaps.

Click a setting to turn it on or off. A check mark shows the setting is on. Click the Snapping magnet button itself to turn Always on on or off.

Snap to points

Snap to points lets the cursor snap to the control points (corners) of geometries. Use it to start or end a line exactly on a parcel corner or building corner. Snap to points is on by default.

Snap to midpoints

Snap to midpoints lets the cursor snap to the middle of each edge of a geometry. Snap to midpoints is on by default.

Snap to edges

Snap to edges lets the cursor snap to any spot along a geometry's edge. Use it to place a point on a boundary line between its corners. Snap to edges is off by default.

Snap to intersections

Snap to intersections lets the cursor snap to the spot where two edges cross. Snap to intersections works in the 2D view only. Snap to intersections is on by default.

Snap to perpendicular

Snap to perpendicular is available in Giraffe V6. It lets the cursor snap to the spot where a line from your last point meets an edge at 90 degrees. Use it to draw a line square to a boundary or building wall. Snap to perpendicular is off by default.

Snap to locked

Snap to locked lets the cursor snap to geometries on locked drawing layers. Turn Snap to locked off to ignore locked layers while you draw. Snap to locked is on by default.

Snap to map

Snap to map lets the cursor snap to the corners and midpoints of base map and spatial layer elements, like parcel lines and building footprints. Snap to map is on by default.

Snap to raw

Snap to raw is available in Giraffe V6. It lets the cursor snap to the geometries you drew. Snap to raw is on by default.

Snap to evaluated

Snap to evaluated is available in Giraffe V6. It lets the cursor snap to the geometries Giraffe generates from your drawing, like the output of a flow. Turn Snap to raw off and Snap to evaluated on to snap only to generated geometries. Snap to evaluated is on by default.

In Giraffe V6, Snap to points, midpoints, edges, intersections, and perpendicular only find geometries when Snap to raw or Snap to evaluated is on.

Smart Snap

Smart Snap shows temporary guide lines while you move geometries. The guides line up a geometry center to center or edge to edge with nearby geometries. Smart Snap is on by default.

Always on

Always on keeps snapping active while you draw. With Always on enabled, hold S to turn snapping off for a moment. With Always on disabled, hold S to turn snapping on for a moment. Always on is off by default.

Snap settings are saved with the project. Each project keeps its own snap settings.
